How Does it Work:

Pulses of filtered light are directed onto the skin and absorbed by the hair follicles. Pulsed light systems are similar to lasers, but with a larger, uniform beam, and a long pulse for safe, fast, and comfortable treatments.

How Many Treatments are Needed:

The number of treatments varies depending on the person, the body part being treated, and how much of the hair is in the active phase of growth. Most of our clients need 6-10 treatments but your treatment provider will be able to give you a better assessment after your consultation.

Several treatments are necessary because hair grows in three phases: anagen, catagen and telogen phases.

  • Anagen is the active phase of hair growth and generally lasts for several months. This is the best phase for the Pulsed Light Systems to disable new hair as it grows.
  • During the brief catagen phase, the hair bulb regresses and begins to shrink.
  • At the end of the telogen resting phase, which typically lasts a few months, hair is released from the shriveled follicles and the anagen phase begins again.

Step 1. Shave the treatment area.
Step 2. Place the pulsed light handpiece on the area to be treated.
Step 3. The handpiece emits a beam of intense pulsed light, which is absorbed by the hair follicles and converted to heat.
Step 4. Heat disables the hair follicles.

How does Palomar pulsed light work?
Palomar Systems use specialized handpieces which filter light from different parts of the spectrum. Different treatments such as hair reduction, sun spot removal, or leg vein clearance require light of different wavelength bands. The Palomar hair removal handpieces emit pulses of light into the hair follicles. The light is absorbed by the pigment in the follicles and converted to heat. The heat then loosens the hair and disables the cells responsible for growing new hair. For more information visit Palomar's Website:

How is Palomar pulsed light different from a laser?
Pulsed light systems and lasers are very simillar, but Palomar Pulsed Light Systems use a much larger treatment window than most lasers. This spreads light over a wider area of skin and allows faster coverage of the skin and quicker treatments as a result.

What body areas can I get treated?
Any area except around the eyes. Areas that are safe to treat include the upper lip, face, neck, underarms, bikini line, legs, chest and back.

Will the treatments hurt?
Palomar Pulsed Light Systems use a unique long pulse width that delivers energy to the skin over a relatively short period of time. This makes the pulses safer and more comfortable. You may experience a feeling similar to that of a rubber band being snapped on the skin, but most people do not report this sensation as painful. The treatments hurt less and less the more you do.

Are there any adverse reactions to treatment?
You may experience temporary redness and a mild “sunburn”- like effect that may last a few hours to a few days.

  • Immediately after treatment, you can expect a mild sunburn-like sensation, possibly accompanied by some minor swelling. This usually lasts 2-24 hours, and can be soothed with cool gel or ice packs.
  • The treated hair will continue to appear for 7-30 days post treatment. This is not new hair growth, but the treated hairs being expelled from the skin.
  • At any given time, some of your hair is not in a phase of active growth. Therefore you will need more than one treatment to affect the growth of all your unwanted hair.
  • Typically, several treatments will be necessary to achieve permanent hair reduction.
